Portsmouth landlord Dinks Ash is as happy as hell…he’s just caught a tope that beats the British boat record for the species.

The 84-pounder just nudges ahead of the current record, which stands at 82lb 8oz and was caught nearly 20 years ago.

Dinks told Sea Angler: “I was fishing aboard the Langstone Harbour charter boat Starfish, skippered by Dave Chapman, and he took us out to one of his top secret Solent tope marks. I was fishing with five friends, so you can imagine the excitement when the fish came aboard.

“After taking a few snapshots I returned the fish safely to the sea.”

The sandbanks and gullies off Langstone, and especially those off Wittering and to the east of the Isle of Wight, are famous tope grounds.
