Situated adjacent to Porthcawl harbour, the town breakwater is a productive year-round venue.
This mark is best fished three and four hours either side of high water, depending on the size of the tide. Do not fish here during heavy seas because large waves and swells can break over the top of the breakwater.
A wide variety of species can be caught in summer including dogfish, conger eels, pouting, pollack, rays, smoothhounds, bass and mullet.
Tope have been caught in the past. During the autumn and winter, the whiting and cod fishing can be good.
Peeler crabs and fish baits, including sandeels are generally regarded as the best summer baits.
Good quality worms and squid are best for winter cod, and nothing beats small strips of frozen mackerel and herring for whiting.
Use standard beachcasting tackle and tactics, which generally include a 12ft rod with a multiplier of fixed-spool reel loaded with 15lb to 18lb mainline and shockleader.
A one or two-hook paternoster rig is best, with size 1 to 4/0 hooks, depending on species and size of bait. Pennell rigs are a good choice when using large worm baits for cod.
Exit the M4 at junction 37 and follow the signs for Porthcawl. When you get to the roundabout outside the town, follow the signs for the seafront. The harbour and breakwater cannot be missed. There is usually ample parking space, although summer parking can be a problem.
