Ballywilling (or Ballinwilling) is an extension of the eastern end of Garryvoe beach. Both these Irish beaches are popular and provide a successful match stretch for shore competitions.

Most productive is the area between the slip road onto the beach at Ballywilling car park and the stream 300 metres to the right. To the left of the car park the beach is interspersed with low, rocky outcrops and on the extreme left is Ballycrenane beach. All these offer good access and parking and provide quality bass fishing.

SPECIES

Winter species include codling up to 3lb, coalfish and whiting. Main species in summer are bass, dogfish, flounders, thornback rays and painted rays. The ray fishing is best in September and October.

BEST BAITS

Try sandeels, mackerel, lugworms, crabs and squid. Lug can be dug behind the rocks on the righthand side of Ardnahinch, west of Garryvoe. Peeler crabs are present, along with some hermit crabs.

TACKLE

A standard beachcaster is essential here with either a fixed-spool or multiplier reel. Use 15lb line, a 50lb shockleader and weights ranging from 3-5oz, depending on weather conditions. A grip lead is required in a strong, easterly wind. Most anglers use a two-hook rig, but a clipped-down single hook rig is best for rays. Hooks range from size 1/0 to 3/0.

GETTING THERE

Travelling from Cork, turn right at the traffic lights in Castlemartyr and proceed on the route 632 through Ladysbridge for 3.5km and turn left and follow the signs for Coast Road and Ballinwilling. Drive for 2.5km and you will see a signpost for Ballinwilling and fishing, which takes you to a large car park at the beach.
